New to fitness? Start here

Four steps, cheapest first. None of them need a membership.

  1. Walk somewhere flat and pretty. The boardwalk at Sawgrass Lake Park or the waterfront parks downtown. Or join the free Get Fit Trail Fun Run at Boyd Hill on Sat, Nov 14 at 8 AM; walkers are welcome.
  2. Take one free coached class. The city's Get Fit St. Pete classes cost nothing with a free sign-up: AARP FitLot at Booker Creek (Tue & Thu 8:30 AM), tai chi on Oct 20, water aerobics on Nov 20.
  3. Try a group that says it's for beginners. St. Pete Running Company's Monday and Thursday 6:30 PM run/walk says plainly: "You WON'T be intimidated by this group!"
  4. Then pick a place. Filter the guide below by Beginner-friendly, 50+ or Low-impact.

Free ways to work out in St. Pete this fall and holiday season

The city runs more free fitness than most people realize. Healthy St. Pete's Get Fit St. Pete classes are free once you sign up for a free digital membership, and they follow a fixed monthly pattern: cardio kickboxing at Campbell Park on the first Tuesday, cardio drumming at Roberts Recreation Center on the first Friday, yoga at Crescent Lake Park on the first Saturday, Pickleball 101 at Bartlett Park on the second Tuesday, Pilates at Flora Wylie Park on the second Thursday, the City Breeze bike tour on the second Friday, a trail fun run at Boyd Hill on the second Saturday, tai chi at Northwest Park on the third Tuesday, Zumba at Childs Park on the third Thursday, water aerobics at E.H. McLin Pool on the third Friday, kayaking from Coffee Pot Park on the fourth Tuesday, Pickleball 101 at Childs Park on the fourth Friday and the Heart Health class at Azalea Park on the fourth Saturday. The events list above has 28 Get Fit dates through Dec 31; some need registration.

The St. Pete Pier adds 9 more free classes on its calendar: sunset yoga with The Body Electric on the first Wednesday, an F45 bootcamp on the first Friday, Pilates with Rare Body on the second Wednesday and mat barre with Freebird Fitness on the last Saturday. Movement Mondays turns the Pier's North View Edge into a free, sober dance floor every Monday from 7 to 9 PM.

If you'd rather run, two running shops host free group runs from three stores. St. Pete Running Company goes Monday and Thursday at 6:30 PM from 22nd Ave N, and Tuesday at 7 AM and Saturday at 7:30 AM from its MLK Street store. Fit2Run's club leaves 801 Central Ave every Wednesday at 6:30 PM. For free space to train, the Pinellas Trail starts downtown and runs 47 miles to Tarpon Springs, open 7 AM to sunset.
